Wood Block Printed Fabrics in Jaipur

View this post on Instagram

Wood Block Designed Textiles are made around Jaipur, India. It’s an old craft that has been dying in India, but there are efforts to preserve it and protect the artisans. First they carve several wood blocks with a pattern that they want to add to the cloth. Then they put the dyes on the wood block and press it into the cloth, let it dry, wash it, and then add more dye etc to get the correct colors with each pattern. It’s very very cool! Textiles are more important than paintings I was told at the city palace. I definitely believe that as clothes are so so important to the culture in India. I bought a skirt from here that I will wear while teaching in NYC.
