View this post on Instagram India’s Prime Minister, Modi, served as a member of parliament for Varanasi for over a decade before becoming India’s PM. When he was elected he uprooted a whole neighborhood in Varanasi (pictured above) so the Hindu Golden Temple would be seen by he Ganges river and so pilgrims can go straight from the river to the temple. There is a mosque right next to the temple and it is a mostly Muslim community that was forced to leave. I was told they were “well paid” for their land by x3 times it’s value.... but many people have lost their family homes. The rest of these buildings in the pictures will be torn down in the next month. A post shared by Amanda Hochstatter (@ms.hochstatter) on Jul 28, 2019 at 10:32pm PDT
